Its India’s time to be on the luxury map of the world, brands are increasing their local presence through standalone stores and outlets, penetrating markets that were once considered unfavorable for luxury brands. Tapping into the sector, industry bigwigs are calling India the next big investment. But, that’s not all, they are out to please the Indian palate, the Indian luxury market is very specific and prefers goods with an edge, “The luxury market in India over the years is seeing a lot of customization, brands are trying to woo the Indian market by bending the rules a bit,” says Keshav Mehta, business analyst working on a book on luxury market in India. “Access is very important to the luxury buyer and so is exclusivity”, he adds.

While India is on the verge of becoming more luxury-friendly, Chennai’s luxury enthusiasts were treated to a truly luxurious feast at ‘World of Luxury’ last month. Glasses got clinking, the glitterati made their way to what seemed like the perfect setting at ITC Grand Chola, the city’s first seven star luxury hotel. World of Luxury, the exclusive event by Watches and Luxury was indeed a statement in itself, an attention-calling event that reinforced the flourishing growth of not only the luxury market in India but also specifically the south of India. The ballroom gave way to a fashion ramp and several boutiques that housed everything from the iconic brands of watches, jewellery, fashion, auto and even yachts. Adding glitter to the night were Kollywood stars Vijay, Jayam Ravi, Lakshmi Rai,Vijay Yesudas, Krish and wife Sangeetha.

Watches have increasingly become a style statement and with increase in global communication, travel and business, people are up-to-date with the latest trends around the world. The astute buyer today is willing to spend if the worth is met. World of Luxury gave buyers a great platform to interact with and discover the latest offerings from brands like Rolex, Bvlgari, Ulysse Nardin that were presented by Helvetica and Raymond Weil by Zimson. Aquatainment splashed the idea of cruising in your very own yacht and the display caught the fancy of many.

Models in all-black outfits sizzled on the ramp but all the attention was on the beautiful timepieces they flaunted. The traditional lehengas complemented the jewellery pieces presented by GRT jewelers and Navrathan. The evening closed with bridal couture from the Erum Ali Bridal Lounge, the line was a beautiful combination of intricate designs with ornate zari work. If you are a pen connoisseur, then Makoba writing lounge at the event was just the place to be, it housed the best brands and writing instruments. Radiance, Catalyst and Asvini with their luxury living spaces made sure the guests had a chance to find their dream home!

While the guests feasted on cheese and cold cuts paired with wine, the speed savvy strolled across to the auto lounge, the eager crowds surrounding the Audi and Mercedes cars on display were stellar examples of how the auto luxury market in India is peaking.
