Information communication and telecommunication (ICT) tools like Internet not only gives information but also it is considered a threat by the IT/ITeS employees. It is like ‘surgical knife which can also be used otherwise', said Mr A.K. Padmanabhan, President, Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU).
Speaking on the sidelines of CII Institute of Quality summit, Mr Padmanabhan said “Work conditions in IT/ITeS may be bad but employees are unable to express it, they fear blacklisting or thrown out of the company.”
“If blacklisted in one company, it is blacklisting by all, for they (IT companies) are well networked,” he added.
Technology should not be looked at as means of cutting jobs. Adoption of technologies should suit the country. “Take requirement of the country or it would be disastrous when adopted recklessly,” he explained.
Earlier, speaking on labour and employment issues in India, Mr Padmanabhan said labour issues were yet to become key issues in any managements or government decisions. It is not discussed seriously either. Efforts should be made that the country's youth power be harnessed to achieve employability and growth.
Long-term strategies
Mr C. Mahalingam, Executive Vice-President and Chief People Officer, Symphony Services, said India having emerged as the world capital for talent and manpower in the recent years.
The country has also shown that employability and skills shortage having emerged as the key challenges that India and Indian Industry would need to tackle with long-term strategies, he added.
Companies need to address issues relating to the key elements of an employee centric business strategy, its capabilities, opportunities and policies and whether enough is being done to leverage the demographic dividend.
Mr Mahalingam said that 78 per cent of employees in the unorganised sector had given rise to challenges in the worker rights for decent wages and though employment opportunities were rising, so was unemployment which was pegged at 9.8 per cent.
Mr Ashok Reddy, Managing Director, TeamLease Services, expected a skill deficit in the future for which employment, employability and education needed to be focused.
