“India is home to the best engineering talent and that is why we have our second largest technology centre outside of Mountain View, California, right here in Bangalore,” said Ganesan Venkatasubramanian, Head of Engineering, LinkedIn Technology Centre India.

The world’s largest professional networking site started its India operations in 2009 and set up offices in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore, followed by the technology centre in November 2011.

Stating that every function including engineering, operations, customer service, sales and marketing of the company is represented here, Ganesan said, “It is a big plus for us that India is 12 hours ahead of Mountain View. Our team here helps to keep the site up and running 24X7 along with our team in the US. India has the second largest LinkedIn member base of 26 million outside of the US, which has 100 million members.”

The site has grown its member base from 135 million members globally, with over 12 million users in India three years ago to 300 million members globally, with over 26 million members in India at present.

LinkedIn has 150 engineers in India who handle operations and engineering, of which 50 engineers are based in Delhi who are a part of the SlideShare team, a result of its acquisition of Indian startup SlideShare for $119 million in 2012.

SlideShare is a content sharing platform for business documents, videos and presentations. The company’s technology centre in Bangalore is spread across two floors with area covering 75,000 sq ft and 38,000 sq ft, which can accommodate around 600 engineers.

While Ganesan said the company is hiring across all functions, including sales and marketing, he declined to mention how many.

The engineering team in Bangalore/Delhi, which works in tandem with the US engineering team to build global products/ features, also focuses on building India-specific products/ features. For instance, the product for recruiters, which was launched in 2012, has a feature built specifically for Indian tech companies to be able to hire talent locally along with their global hires.

LinkedIn is available in 21 different languages, has members in over 200 countries, 3.5 million active company profiles and averages 187 million monthly unique visitors as of December 2013. The site has 300,000 available jobs postings and has 24,000 schools showcased along with billions of updates.

“We launched LinkedIn in China in February and have already garnered 5 million members there” said Ganesan, who added that 43 per cent of the traffic on LinkedIn is through mobile devices.

To cater to this growing trend, LinkedIn has mobile apps for Recruiters, a LinkedIn app for mobiles and a Pulse app for mobiles through which users can access content which is customised to their preferences.
