Aircel and Huawei have jointly conducted trials that will enable subscribers to use the same device across three different networks - GSM, 3G and Long Term Evolution- Time Division Duplex (LTE-TDD).
This is the world's first GSM/UMTS/LTE-TDD trial. The trial was based on a device based on Qualcomm Incorporated's multimode chipset and Huawei's convergent systems. The success of this trial is a key milestone for the development of LTE-TDD ecosystem.
The trial covered end-to-end interoperability of services & applications, radio access and core network.
“Aircel is pleased to be the first telecom service provider to have successfully experienced LTE-TDD functionality using multimode devices based on Qualcomm's MDM9600 chipset in our GSM/UMTS/LTE-TDD network provided by Huawei at Hyderabad. It will further equip us to offer a rich mobile broadband experience to the subscribers,” said Mr Mallikarjun Rao, CTO of Aircel.
With 3G services expected to face congestion in the next 2-3 years, operators are interested in deploying multi-mode networks to meet the increasing demand for high speed data services. The efficient inter-operability across networks will help operators reduce their network investments, operation and maintenance costs and ensure a rich mobile broadband experience for end users.
Mr Deng Taihua, President of Huawei's WiMAX & TD-SCDMA & LTE-TDD product line, said: “This first IOT on an existing UMTS network will stimulate the mobile broadband market in India, and show the way forward for the LTE industry.”
“We are committed to establishing a strong LTE roadmap for both 3G HSPA and EV-DO operators, that utilises their existing investments to further the growth of mobile broadband in India,” said Dr Sandeep Sibal, Country Manager and Vice-President-Business Development, Qualcomm India & South Asia.
