Twitter was recently down because of what the company described as a cascading bug.

According to Twitter's blog, the term cascading bug is used to refer to a bug whose effect cascades into other elements.

While Twitter downtime is big news, the service has good uptime. In fact, Pingdom data of Twitter downtime across 63 months from February 2007 to May 2012 (Pingdom unfortunately has no figures for February 2011) shows that Twitter’s uptime stands at 99.31 per cent.

Twitter's worst performance was in March 2007, when its uptime was 92.03 per cent. In the last 12 months, Twitter has been up for 99.70 per cent of the time and in April 2012, it was up 100 per cent of the time.

In the last 63 months, Twitter’s uptime fell below 99 per cent only 12 times and on eight of these occasions, it was above 98 per cent.

Of these 12 occasions, it happened only once in 2011 (in October) and 2010 (in June). Most of the outages happened in 2007 (six times) and in 2008 (four times).
