Notwithstanding the shortcomings in air connectivity and infrastructure development, Coimbatore has managed to clock around ₹4,000 crore from IT exports. Industry insiders are confident of achieving the export target of ₹5000 crore this fiscal.

“Coimbatore will continue to remain an IT destination. IT exports from this region have grown 35-40 per cent in the last two to three; the region has engaged over 20,000 people in the IT SEZs,” said Ashok Bakthavatsalam, Past Chairman, CII, Coimbatore zone, and Managing Director, KG Information Systems.

The city is now preparing to host the 14th edition of Connect Coimbatore, a flagship IT event, scheduled for August 7 here.

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Coimbatore zone, which organises the programme, has planned to focus on the theme “Are you learning as fast as the world is changing?” this year. Over 200 participants have enrolled for this event, say CII sources.

CII has engaged ICRA Management Services to develop the District Development Plan for the city. According to K Ilango, Chairman, CII, Coimbatore zone, and Vice-President, Rangamma Steels and Malleables, this report by ICRA should be ready by October. It is expected to align with the Vision 2023 document of the State Government. “The report will give us an insight of the Government’s thought process. We cannot achieve goals without an action plan in place,” he said, adding, “the emphasis would not be limited to infrastructure development, but beyond that, to the socio-economic impact of this region.”
