Travel company Expedia expects overall bookings received from mobile devices to double this year in India.

Keeping in mind the fast changing consumer booking patterns, it plans to a launch an app designed specifically for tablet users. The app is expected to be launched in the second quarter of this year.

Explaining the rationale behind a different experience for tablet users, Jerald Singh, Head of Mobile Product, Expedia, said, “Overall 60 per cent bookings are from those who looking for the last minute deal. In addition, most users are booking same day hotels and choose that are close to their current location. But when consumers are using tablets it is for research and to explore new destinations as well look for recommendations, which led us to plan to offer a different app for tablet users.”

Singh said that a team at the Gurgaon office will work alongside the US teams on Expedia’s mobile products.

The company also believes that to succeed in the mobile apps space, it has to win in the Asian region, given the fast growing penetration of smartphones and other mobile devices. Vikram Malhi, General Manager South & Southeast Asia, Expedia, said that nearly 15 per cent of its bookings currently come from the mobile platform in India.
