Google is keen to ramp up small and medium business (SMB) in India by expanding its outreach and training initiative.

“The SMB sector is the single biggest growth driver for Google India. It is growing at 100 per cent year-on-year and is set to accelerate this year. In the last one-and-a-half years, our SME active customer base has tripled,” said Mr Sridhar Seshadri, Head – Online Sales, Google India.

The SMB sector for Google primarily comes from Google AdWords. Adwords is a search marketing tool that helps businesses create and run ads on Google search.

Google has been involved in evangelising the importance of the Internet as a sales channel among small and medium enterprises for over a year now. It has even set up dedicated call centres to guide advertisers on using Adwords.

Workshops

In the last three months, Google has conducted on-ground workshops for 3,000 SMBs across the country. This year, it is looking to organise 125 workshops across 20 cities and 15,000 SMBs. The company has also been partnering with SMBs who in turn pass on their knowledge to other small enterprises. Currently, Google has seven such SMB partners; it is targeting 100 by the end of the year.

“The Internet today is no longer just a digital media. It is actually a store front for businesses. With increasing Internet penetration and awareness, more and more businesses are keen to tap into the Internet to generate leads. Today, conversations are not about technology, but what it can do to spur business,” said Mr Seshadri.
