The telecommunications tribunal has ruled in favour of Reliance Communications, setting aside claims by the two public sector telecom firms.

The case dates back to 2007, when the Anil Ambani group company moved Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal, stating its Home Country Direct (HCD) services were overestimated and overcharged by MTNL and BSNL.

On Wednesday, TDSAT has ordered a refund of the fines levied on RCom by the two state-owned telecom companies after it rejected their charges.

The tribunal also rejected claims for liquidated damages and retention of the amounts paid by RCom and ruled that RCom should be refunded with due interest, the company’s spokesperson said.

RCom had started providing HCD services — a service to facilitate calling home while travelling abroad — in 2004. In its petitions, RCom had also sought refund of the excess amount of about Rs 383 crore, which it alleged was charged arbitrarily by BSNL and MTNL.
