The information technology sector in Andhra Pradesh continues its growth course, despite the gloomy economic conditions globally.
An indication of this can be had from the projections that the new office space to be taken up by IT firms is expected to grow 15 per cent this year.
“The office space by IT firms in Hyderabad is expected to touch 20 million sq ft this year, representing 12 per cent of the country’s office space in the IT sector,” AP Minister for IT Ponnala Lakshmaiah said at the eIndia summit 2012 here.
In 2011-12, about 60 lakh sq ft of built-up office space was occupied by this sector, as against 50 lakh sq ft in the previous year, with 70 per cent of this being in the form of expansion of existing offices.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy inaugurated the two-day summit today, in the presence of Union Minister of State for Communications and IT Kruparani Killi. The summit is focussing on themes of e-governance, education and e-health.
The State is currently home to about 1,206 IT companies, including top global entities. It accounts for about 11 per cent of the total employment in the Software Technology Parks of India.
Lakshmaiah said the State had an approval in place for creating an IT Investment Region in Hyderabad. “This is expected to create employment for 15 lakh people over the next 25 years,” he said.
Under the National Optical Fibre Network, the State will be bringing Internet to every panchayat by 2013 — the project is estimated to cost Rs 2,000 crore to the State.
The summit will see 53 companies bagging awards for innovation and excellence in governance, education and healthcare.
