Chinese computer maker Lenovo announced jumps in revenues and profit Thursday on the back of strong sales of smartphones and tablets.
Income was up 18 per cent year-on-year for the quarter to June, the first of the financial year, while net income was up 23 per cent to 213.5 million dollars, the company said.
The company made up for a shrinking global market in personal computers, which it dominates, by gaining ground in other sectors.
Lenovo said it was now the world’s fourth—largest manufacturer of high—end mobile phones, claiming 5.2 per cent of the market behind Samsung, Apple and Huawei. It has 4.9 per cent of the tablet market, behind Apple and Samsung.
The results consolidated the company’s position as the world’s top seller of PCs, with 19.4 per cent of that market, after buying the PC department of US manufacturer IBM in 2005.
Lenovo announced in January its intention to buy part of IBM’s server business, and Motorola Mobility, the mobile phone unit owned by Google Inc. Both acquisitions are pending approval by US authorities.
