With a view to expanding its presence in North Asia and Japan, Mahindra Satyam has initiated talks with IT companies in China and Japan that would give it access to their local clients.

“We are in talks with a few companies in China and are hopeful of signing pacts with at least a couple of firms this year,” Mr Rohit Gandhi, Head of the Asia-Pacific Region of Mahindra Satyam, told Business Line .

“While we bring to the table expertise and global delivery capabilities in China and India, our association with our Chinese partners would give us access to their clients,” he said.

The company would continue to focus on engineering services in China that accounted for about half of its revenues. In Australia, it would focus on infrastructure management services and business process management. The company, which has about 3,000 employees in the APAC region, also saw good opportunity in cloud offerings. “We have implemented a virtual private cloud, comprising 5,000 virtual desktops, for a financial services company in Australia. Some of our other clients are also keen on this solution,” he said.

With regard to the cloud business, it is also focussing on small and medium businesses (SMBs). “We have begun offering Analytics solutions on public cloud. This is useful for SMBs that cannot afford to buy the solution and relevant hardware but still need it,” he said.

Attrition

The company, which witnessed a huge churn in employees following the financial fraud, currently has an attrition rate of 20 per cent.

“This is the industry norm in the region. It was significantly high two years ago. But we still need to do better. We are back on profitability,” Mr Rohit said.

New contract

Meanwhile, the company said it had won a multi-million, multi-year contract from Aspire Zone Foundation of Qatar. A leading sports institute, Aspire Zone, will also utilise its expertise in event and venue management technologies, Mr C. P. Gurnani, Chief Executive Officer of Mahindra Satyam, said here in a statement.

Mr Gurnani met Mr Hilal Al-Kuwari, President of Aspire Zone Foundation, in Qatar to discuss the deal.
