The National Association for Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) programme to certify and rate engineering students, has no takers in the State.

The programme seeks to enable students to measure up to the exacting standards set by recruiters in the IT and engineering sectors.

Mr V. K. Mathews, Executive Member, Nasscom, says that engineering colleges have shied away from being certified under the NAC Tech (Nasscom Assessment of Competence - Technology) programme.

This is an industry-standard assessment and certification regimen to keep alive a robust and continuous pipeline of talent for the IT and engineering industry.

It rates final-year and pre-final students based on their performance in an online examination conducted by Nasscom, Mr Mathews told Business Line.

Recruiters could use the NAC Tech score to assess the quality of students seeking employment. Very few engineering colleges here enrol students for this examination, said Mr Mathews, who is also the Executive Chairman of the IBS Group.

The tests keep changing every year. The intent is to identify the level of available talent and provide feedback on areas to be work on to improve employability.

Engineering colleges could approach the Nasscom office in Thiruvananthapuram to get students enrolled for the programme, Mr Mathews said.

Meanwhile, the Group of Technology Companies (GTech), the industry body of software companies in Kerala, will launch a rating process for engineering colleges. Mr Anoop Ambika, Secretary, GTech, said the groundwork had been set in motion. GTech member companies would be encouraged to recruit from the rated engineering colleges.

“We will give inputs to institutions on what needs to be done to upgrade standards from the industry perspective. We will set some parameters,” he said.

Upgradation

Mr Mathews, who chairs GTech, said the certification programme would encourage institutions to upgrade themselves.

The rating would be based on the basic capability of the institution, the student-teacher ratio, infrastructure, the performance of students and placements.
