California-based Polycom, a global leader in unified communications solutions, is sharpening focus on its Indian operations, with plans to set up an assembly unit and expanding its R&D centre in Hyderabad.

“India is an important market for us, with exciting opportunities in the video-conferencing and tele-conferencing segments. Growth for these solutions is coming from small and medium enterprises, apart from government agencies. We plan to step up our operations here,” Mr Andrew M. Miller, President and CEO of the company, told Business Line .

The company will be setting up an assembly unit to cater to the Indian and neighbouring markets soon. “We are looking at Hyderabad and a few other cities for the proposed assembly unit,” he said. He, however, did not disclose the investment that would be required for setting up the unit.

The Innovation Development Centre (IDC) in Hyderabad, which is one of Polycom's three R&D centres in the Asia Pacific region, is also being expanded. “The centre at present has 100 professionals on the rolls and this will be doubled by early 2012,” Mr Miller said.

The centre is engaged in development of innovative unified communication products and solutions for Polycom's portfolio of voice and video communication solutions for mobile, desktop and conferencing applications. The facility was awarded the Best Startup Offshore Development Centre at the IT & ITES Industry Association of AP meet earlier this month.

Delhi SBC

The company this year set up a new Solutions Briefing Centre (SBC) in Delhi, as part of its plans to target new verticals in the Indian market.

The centre features the latest in immersive tele-presence technology. It will also showcase Polycom's voice, video and telepresence solutions.

“We plan to further drive innovation in mobility, cloud-based video services, B2B interoperability and executive desktop products,” Mr Miller said.

Beetel Teletech has been partnering with Polycom to advance the adoption of unified communications in organisations across India.
