Kerala Government's IT@School project plans to conduct a public awareness programme on free software beginning this month.
The unique awareness session being launched is aimed at providing an opportunity to the public to familiarise with some of the popular software applications, a press release said here.
One-day seminars highlighting how to use the GNU/Linux applications would be held at the district offices of the project during the summer holidays, it said.
IT@School project, the technology arm of the Education Department, is termed as the “world's largest simultaneous deployment of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS)-based Information and Communication Technology education,” it said.
Annually, an estimated 50 lakh students benefit in the ICT-enabled education, which is entirely on free software platform, the release said.
The aim is to gradually extend the facilities available in schools during holidays for imparting free software based ICT training to parents and general public with the help of student IT club members, said Mr Anwar Sadath, Executive Director of IT@School.
