Smart Sky Electronics and Research Pvt Ltd, the company set up by the ex-MindTree employee, Mr Samartha Raghava N, in February, has won an order from a UK-based healthcare company to supply 25,000 tablets for patient monitoring.

“We will supply both the tablet and the solution. We may manufacture the tablet too if the customer wants it. If they want to get another company as the original design manufacturer, we will give them the design. Either way, production quality will be in our hands,” Mr Raghava told Business Line . The company predominantly plans to target the US and European markets for its solutions and plans to diversify into Latin America, Africa and India later.

Discussing Smart Sky's strategy, Mr Raghava said his company wanted to concentrate on wireless diffusion. “We want to put together solutions based on smartphones and tablets for industries such as healthcare and retail, among others,” he said. While many of the initial offerings would be based on Android, Mr Raghava said that his company was also keen on the Brew Mobile Platform (BMP) and Windows Mobile. “This year, we are looking only at Android. We should have something based on either BMP or Windows Mobile in 2012 and by 2014, we will have solutions based on all three platforms,” he said. The Brew Mobile Platform OS is offered by Qualcomm for feature phones and is used on products such as the HTC Smart.

Mr Raghava started Kyocera Wireless India in 2003 and became the President and CEO of MindTree Wireless in 2009 when MindTree acquired Kyocera Wireless India. When MindTree decided to discontinue its smartphone business in November 2010, he moved out of the company and started Smart Sky
