Synopsys, the US-based $1.5-billion electronic design automation (EDA) company, is developing an interoperable process design kit (IPDK) to address the $300-million opportunity in the mixed signal area.

“Mixed (digital and analog) Indian research teams were playing a key role in developing this tool,” Dr Chi-Foon Chan, President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Synopsys, told Business Line .

Interaction between digital and analog signals was required as, say, a GPS device in mobile received signals from satellite. “Signals that are coming from a satellite are actually analog. You need to process these and digitise them,” he said.

Indian market

On the Indian market, he said companies (semiconductor) in India had talent to tap potential for intellectual property development systems in India.

“We see that business growing at more than 10 per cent globally. In India, it is multinational companies that are driving (the IP development). I think one of the key things to watch in India is you have a lot more local companies. I think local companies certainly have talent and capital,” said Dr Chi-Foon Chan.

“What we are seeing is a niche market there. We are hoping these companies to start. We are interested in government initiatives. It creates environment to create ecosystem but it does not design a chip or create a chip. You need an industry for the creativity of people to take advantage of that and then the third part is universities,” he said.

Of the total workforce of 6,500 employees, Synopsys employed 1,000 in India at its Bangalore, Hyderabad and Noida facilities. The company recently acquired two US firms, Coware and Virage, both with operations at Noida, getting at about 150 employees at Noida. Holding about $850 million of cash and cash equivalents, it had so far acquired 50 firms.

Ties up with colleges

With a view to building ecosystem in India, it tied up with about 170 colleges to give them its licences at discounted rate. Besides, it joined the Union Government's Strategic manpower development programme (SMDP) that covered 19 universities in the first tranche and 32 in the second.

“In the third round, it is planning to cover 50 universities,” Dr Pradip K Dutta, Corporate Vice-President and Managing Director of Synopsys (India) Private Ltd, said.s
