The Tamil Nadu Government will procure another 5.65 lakh laptops to be distributed to school and college students. WiFi has been included in the laptop’s configuration, which otherwise remains the same as in the case of the earlier procurement.

This is the third phase of the Government’s plan to procure a total of 68 lakh laptops to distribute to students.

Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu has issued a global tender to procure the 5.65 lakh laptops. Companies such as Hewlett Packard, Acer, Lenovo and HCL are expected to participate in the tender.

In the first phase, in financial year 2011-12, the State Government distributed 8,98,866 laptops and in the second phase, during the last financial year, it distributed 7,55,552 laptops.

The beneficiaries of the scheme are plus two students studying in Government and Government-aided schools, students in government and government-aided arts and science and engineering colleges and polytechnics. Of the total 68 lakh laptops, so far around 16 lakSh have been distributed. A company need not have a manufacturing base in India — it could import, but would need to have a representative in India.

The bidder should have an annual manufacturing capacity of at least one lakh units a year and should have sold at least 50,000 laptops in any one of the previous three audited years, says the tender.
