The indefinite strike call given by All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) for truckers across Maharashtra has been withdrawn following late night intervention by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
The State Government assured AIMTC that their key demand of abolition of escort fee has been accepted and within one month it would be scrapped.
On Tuesday, AIMTC had asked all about 20 lakh truckers to go on an indefinite strike on Wednesday in protest against the levying of escort fee.
An escort fee is paid to a person who accompanies a truck on behalf of a local municipal authority to ensure that goods entering a municipal area are not offloaded without paying the requisite fees.
AIMTC president Bal Malkit Singh told Business Line that on assurances of the Chief Minister the strike has been called off. The Transport Minister of Maharashtra, Madhukar Chavan and other senor officials have assured that within one month the escort fee would be scrapped. The minutes of meeting where this decision was taken has also been provided to AIMTC, he said.
