Vodafone is working with handset makers to bring the price of 3G-enabled smartphones to under $50, a top company official said.
“Growth in the data market will depend on the cost of the 3G-enabled handsets. Currently, it is in the sub-$100 range, around $85. We would like it come down to less than $50,” said Mr Vittorio Colao, Chief Executive Officer of the Vodafone Group. It is currently in discussions with Chinese smartphone makers to make this a reality. However, Mr Colao did not specify by when the markets could expect a sub-$50 smartphone.
“The 3G usage will outstretch initial projections if cheaper smartphones are made available in the Indian market. It will completely change the dynamics of the market here,” said Mr Kunal Bajaj, Director- India of research firm Analysis Mason.
It may be recalled that Vodafone Essar had paid $2.4 billion last year to procure 3G spectrum in nine telecom circles.
