The Union Minister of State for Food, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution, Prof K.V. Thomas, has launched the Web site of the All Kerala Bread Manufacturers' Association.
Speaking on the occasion, he said value addition should get adequate focus in food industry. The Minister said food habits were undergoing a change and new products had entered the industry in a big way.
Apart from making efforts to enhance the shelf life of cereals, care needed to be taken to avoid wastage of food at mass ceremonies.
Adopting scientific practices in manufacturing and improved systems for distribution, would contribute to measures aimed at achieving food security.
Mr K.Ravindran Nair, President of the Association urged the Government to provide raw materials at subsidised rates to the bread manufacturing sector.
He also wanted the authorities to set up a centralised laboratory in Central Kerala for the benefit of the industry.
