After keeping itself low in the smartphone segment, the B K Modi-promoted mobile handset firm Spice has joined the fiercely fought, fast-growing segment in the country.

The company is one of the first local mobile players to come out with a smartphone about four years ago. But contribution from smartphones is just about 10 per cent of its monthly sales of 10 lakh units. In order to increase the share from the lucrative handset segment, the company lined up a smartphone at the lower end of price.

The company claims a market share of 2.5 per cent in the Indian mobile handset market.

Priced at Rs 3,299, Spice Smart Flo Edge handset comes with a 1 GHz processor, Android Gingerbread 2.3 Operating System and two cameras.

“We have just begun to focus on smartphones. We would like to increase our share in this segment as well as the overall handset share in the country,” Rohan Kurian, Category Head (Smart Phones) of S Mobility Ltd. As it launched the new phone, it also announced its entry into the Andhra Pradesh market, which is dominated by local players Micromax and Celkon at the lower end. It would also come out with a tablet in the next few weeks.

The company will come out with a bundled offer with the telecom service provider Aircel.
