When telecom czar Sunil Bharti Mittal said, “Battles will be fought on the street every day among the players,” to an interview with BusinessLine in December 2015, almost a year before the launch of Reliance Jio, he may have sounded dramatic. But today it is coming true.

Bharti Airtel has filed a police complaint at Gurgaon against a person/persons, who was running an e-mail campaign ‘Oppose Airtel from misleading consumers’ to malign the company.

“On going through the contents of the email, it is evident that the sender of the email desires to malign Bharti Airtel’s brandname by initiating a motivated complaint for the services provided by Bharti Airtel, Idea and Vodafone to TRAI,” the company said in a first information report (FIR) to Gurgaon police . BusinessLine has a copy of the FIR, which was filed on February 3. The company also said that such attempts were made to not only malign and damage the brand name Bharti Airtel, but also ‘benefiting our competitor in the telecom industry’.

Airtel in the FIR alleged that around 3,000 mails were sent from an email id – info@techaajkal.com, which was relatively new and registered as recently as January 9 and further investigation by the company revealed that an attempt to conceal the details of the owner of the website were also made.

“On further internal investigation, we found that the domain ‘mailer1.techaajkal.com’ has a digital certificate registered in the name of ‘shailendra@vaishnaviit.in’. It was further discovered that the same email address is used for obtaining digital certificates for other domains, including the domain mail.jiohomedelivery, com and mail.myawacs.com,” Airtel said in the complaint.
