RDP, a home-grown IT hardware and mobility manufacturing firm, is raising about ₹20 crore ($ 3 million) for expanding its footprint in the country. The start-up firm invested ₹ 20 crore in the last five years in building the product and establishing assembly lines at Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh.

“We are in talks to raise the funds primarily for sales and marketing. We have registered sales of ₹20 crore in 2016-17. We are targeting to double the turnover as we started a new vertical to sell ThinBook range of laptops,” Vikram Redlapalli, the Founder-Chief Executive Officer of RDP, told BusinessLine .

Vikram, who used to be a reseller in his native town of Anantapur, started the firm, targeting the lower end of the PC market, which he thinks is largely underserved. The firm, which started off its operations by making thin clients and mini-PCs, rolled out laptops, which include a laptop-cum-tablet, and tablets last year.

“For now, we have decided to sell our products under ₹15,000, keeping in view the price-sensitive market,” he said.

While the tablets are priced at ₹3,999 and ₹4,999, laptops are sold at ₹9,999 and ₹13,999.

Stating that the PC penetration in India was very low at 9 per cent as against over 60 per cent in the US and China, he said one reason for this was high cost of the computers. “The average price of a PC in India is ₹29,000, which is prohibitive for first time buyers. We are targeting this space with the sub-₹15,000 price,” he said. It tied up with the global semiconductor distributor WPG as its national distributor.
