Having been hailed by many as one of the hottest new operating systems in the market, Windows Phone has had many takers. Among them is Finnish handset maker Nokia. The Nokia Lumia 800 was the first Windows Phone 7.5 handset launched by the company. And unlike the other manufacturers, Nokia’s smartphone strategy is solely focussed on Windows. The company has been working with Microsoft to help them develop apps for the Windows marketplace.
On Day One of Microsoft TechEd held here, Business Line spoke to Mr Vipul Mehrotra, Director, Smart Devices, India, about Nokia’s partnership with Microsoft.
According to Mr Mehrotra, "The great thing about Windows phone apps is that the user interface for developed apps and native apps is identical. A good example is the canvas UI which lets you swipe between pages.”
Mr Mehrotra says Nokia is working with Microsoft to create an apps ecosystem which will enable Windows apps to have a greater reach. Nokia already has a strong working relationship with developers who create apps for its Symbian phones. The company is capitalising on this by encouraging them to develop apps for Windows Phone as well.
Some of the ‘branded apps’ Nokia has worked on for Windows Phone include Zomato and NDTV. These apps will be available on any Windows phone, not just Nokia’s own. “We are 100 per cent committed to Microsoft. If other smartphone manufacturers gain from this, then so be it,” said Mr Mehrotra.
