Cyber security training firm Fortinet is committed to bridging the gaps in cyber security skills and going beyond providing training on products and solutions, according to its Regional Vice-President (India & SAARC), Rajesh Maurya.
Stating that there is an unprecedented shortage of cyber security workforce, he said, “Cyber adversaries will continue to benefit if the security operations teams are understaffed and overworked to tackle the growing global threat.”
Bridging the gap
Fortinet plans to roll out expanded training and education initiatives to bridge the gap. “Our recent addition includes Fortinet Network Security Expert (NSE) Institute cloud certifications and offering of cyber security awareness training free of cost to individuals and organisations seeking to deploy a cyber security awareness training programme,” he said.
According to a 2019 Gartner survey, the global talent shortage is now the top emerging risk facing organisations. The expansion of the digital marketplace has generated more jobs than the current supply. And there is no efficient way to create skilled security practitioners at the same rate, Maurya said.
A recent workforce development survey showed that 59 per cent of organisations have unfilled cyber security positions. Frost & Sullivan estimates the shortfall of such professionals to rise to over 1.5 million by 2020.
Creating and executing a strategy with a wide scope can be a daunting task, but that is the mandate of Fortinet NSE Institute. The institute has so far issued close to 2 lakh certifications, he said.
“We are now equally focussed on programmes such as the Fortinet Security Academy programme for high schools, colleges and universities, the FortiVets programme that facilitates the transition of exceptional military veterans into the cyber security industry as well as publicly available awareness training that can be accessed by organisations wishing to deploy internal cyber security awareness programme for its workforce,” Maurya said.
“Further, in addition to such training and education programmes, a strategic partnership within governments, academia and NGOs is crucial to address the skills gap. We will collaborate, innovate and develop global solutions to reduce cyber attacks, contain current and future attacks and deter cyber crime,” he added.
