With 4G, 5G, fibre-to-home and data centres triggering demand for optical fibre, Himachal Futuristic Communication Ltd is setting up a ₹260-crore optical fibre manufacturing unit at the Fab City near here.
Even as it rolls out its manufacturing project, the company is mulling a second phase with an investment of ₹700 crore to further expand its capacity and set up a ‘preform’ facility at the site.
It is also planning to start production of defence equipment such as mini SUVs production in Hyderabad.
Addressing reporters after the event, Mahendra Nahata, Chairman of HFCL group, however, has said that the firm is yet to firm up a plan on the expansion.
Construction work on the 20-acre optical fibre manufacturing site will begin in a week and is expected to be completed in a year. It would provide jobs to 300.
The unit will have an annual capacity of 6.4 million fibre kilometres. The company is planning to expand the capacity to 8 million fibre kilometres soon after the first phase goes live.
These fibre manufactured in Hyderabad will go into the cable manufactured at company’s facilities in Chennai and in Goa.
Earlier, Telangana IT and Industries Minister K T Rama Rao has laid the stone for construction work on the site.
Growing demand
The demand for optical fibre in the country is expected to grow to 60-70 million fibre kilometres in the next three years. “For now, the fibre manufactured here would be meant for internal consumption,” he said.
