Computer hardware manufacturer Hewlett Packard (HP) India said the company will not enter smartphones market for at least next few years. However, it will soon enter the tablet computers market with a product launch.

Other competitors such as Acer and Lenovo have announced for re-entering the smartphones market.

“I do not think we have a robust roadmap to get into the smartphones segment. At the moment, there is no plan. But, we have strong plans for tablet computers in India. We will launch a Windows 8 tablet by end of this month or early February,” Rajiv Srivastava, Vice-President and General Manager - printers and personal systems, HP India, told Business Line .

He said through the new tablet, the company’s intent is to make seamless experience to consumers with all the applications — which could be used both in office and at home – depending on the requirements. Without sharing much details, he said the tablet will be a 10-inch device and priced above Rs 30,000.

Srivastava said keeping in mind the needs of the Indian consumers, the company is working on various plans for each categories – whether it is a laptop, desktop, tablets or printers.

However, he also said the company will never compromise on prices and will never be selling low-cost devices. Currently, it has products that are priced from Rs 20,000 to more than Rs 1 lakh.

“We know we are not best in the market, but what we also continue make sure post buying experience of our customers are superior from others. And it is not true only for our computers, but also for our printers range,” he said.

Sales network

For example, he said HP India is creating a strong after sales service network for the students in lot of educational institutes and campuses. It makes a strong proposition for its products as a student stays for three-four years in any campus and they use a laptop for at least that many years.

“Therefore, through such service centres, we provide them products as per their requirement. And, as students use these products roughly, we make sure that our support network is strong to cater to their requirements quickly,” he added.
