India is likely to emerge as the second largest smartphone selling country in the world given the growth in sales, according to Raghu M. Reddy, (Head) Online Sales, Xiaomi India.

Last year, smartphone sales in India had gone up around 10 per cent. At this pace of growth, he said, India could overtake the US market and become the second largest smartphone market globally after China.

Speaking on the sidelines of a function to mark the launch of the Redmi Y2 in the Kerala market, Reddy said the growth is happening in the Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 price range, especially in the wake of consumers upgrading to this mid-range segment.

Xiaomi is currently the largest selling smartphone brand in the country, with a growth of over 300 per cent in 2017. It currently enjoys a market share of over 30 per cent, including online and offline sales in the first quarter. The total size of the smartphone market in the country is estimated at 130 million units per annum.

``We have been the top smartphone player in the country for the last three quarters since September 2017” he said, adding that Xiaomi has a 60 per cent share in online smartphone sales. The company has ramped up its production facilities and now has six units spread across Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. The printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) used in smartphones, which account for 50 per cent of the value of the phone, will be made in India, he added.
