The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) on Tuesday said that the Government should raise the issue of the US Government accessing data of Indian Internet users.

It said the recent media reports on how agencies of the US Government may have had accessed the data of Indian users without the permission of either the users or the Government of India is a major concern for the country.

“The Government of India should raise it strongly with the highest levels of Government in the US through various bilateral channels and drive a speedy resolution to the issue,” Subho Ray, President, IAMAI, said.

He said the association is supportive of promoting India as a preferred destination for hosting services and research and development in hi-tech industry.

However, it does not believe that new regulations impairing a ‘global Internet’ are the solution to the present problem.

The Internet industry believes in promoting privacy and security for its users, and the association's members are constantly innovating in providing more secure commerce and communications to its users, he said.

“IAMAI is sure that the Government of India will continue to strive to safeguard its citizens’ right to privacy while balancing national security interests, and not rush to follow regressive policies — whether real or perceived — adopted by some other governments,” he added.
