India has moved into second place with regards to the number of spam calls received by users.The number of spam calls have risen to an alarming 7 per cent mark. According to a study by Truecaller, Brazil topped the list, becoming the most spammed country in the world. The countrysaw an 81 per cent increase, in the number of spam calls, from the previous year.
Nearly 6.1 per cent of the calls received by Indian users in 2018 were spam calls. However, the average number of spam calls received per user in India has dropped to 22.3 calls per user/month, which is 1.5 per cent less than the previous year, it said.
With regards to spam call categorisation, operators and telecom service providers continue to be the top spammers in India.91 per cent of the calls aim to sell various offers and balance reminders. This is followed by scam callers and telemarketers, who garnered 7 per cent and 2 per cent, respectively.
Truecaller has been successful in identifying and blocking 20.2 billion calls.
Following Brazil and Indiawere Chile and South Africa in the list of 20 countries affected by spam calls in 2018.
Truecaller said it has identified and blocked 17.7 billion spam calls globally, where every fourth call that the users received was a spam call.
The caller categorisations considered in the report include operators, scam, nuisance, financial services, insurance, telemarketers, debt collectors, political, robocall and e-commerce.
