Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJio) added a whopping 8.54 million users in July, even as the other private operators’ subscriber base eroded during the month. The total number of telephone subscribers in the country rose by 0.22 per cent to 1,189.28 million as of July end, from 1,186.63 million in June.
Vodafone Idea, the largest operator by users, lost 3.4 million users to record 380 million subscribers during the month under review, while Bharti Airtel’s user base eroded by 2.6 million subscribers to 328.51 million. RJio’s subscriber base stood at 339.79 million during the period, according to data released by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) was the only other operator to add users during the month. The State-owned company added 288,027 customers to take its total to 116.45 million users in July.
Vodafone Idea, with a market share of 32.53 per cent, topped the charts, followed by RJio at 29.08 per cent and Airtel came in third with a 28.12 per cent share.
The total number of wireless users stood at 1,168.31 million, while the wired connections stood at 20.96, according to TRAI’s telecom subscription data as on July 31.
The urban subscription rose to 678.02 million (from 675.58 million) as of July-end, while rural subscription rose to 511.25 million (511.05 million).
In July, 5.92 million users requested for porting their numbers under the Mobile Number Portability (MNP).
The country’s private operators had an 89.73 per cent market share as of July 31, while the remaining 10.27 per cent was held by the two public sector companies, BSNL and MTNL.
Wireline subscribers declined to 20.96 million in July from 21.17 million in June.
The top five wired broadband service providers were BSNL (9.05 million), Bharti Airtel (2.40 million), Atria Convergence Technologies (1.47 million), Hathway Cable & Datacom (0.85 million) and You Broadband (0.75 million).
The top five wireless broadband service providers were RJio (339.79 million), Bharti Airtel (121.54 million), Vodafone Idea (110.90 million), BSNL (12.58 million) and MTNL (0.21 million).
