When Varun, a class X student wanted help with his Physics lessons, his mother Sathya Venkatesh was in a dilemma for good coaching centres in CBSE curriculum are hard to come by in Coimbatore. Though not a place of distances, she felt even if she found one, she would have to relocate her home closer to the coaching centre, so her son didn't waste much time commuting.

Sathya discussed this issue with a relative, who asked her to try Kaaryin, the live tutor solutions platform.

Varun has not looked back since. He opted for the Commerce stream in +2 and is today able to undertake coaching in accountancy from the comfort of his home.

He also enjoys the luxury of choosing his tutor, which would not have been possible had he registered with a particular coaching centre.

Vikaas Nagla, a CA (Final) student in Hyderabad, seemed more than happy after three months of rigorous coaching in financial reporting. “I registered on Kaaryin and managed to attend the classes conducted by Kapileshwar Bhalla, a Delhi-based Chartered Accountant. If not for this integrated live tutor platform, I do not think it would have been possible to get an expert like Bhalla to mentor us,” he said, feeling more confident about taking his examination.

The founder and Chief Executive of Live Tutor Solutions (P) Ltd, Anantha Krishnan, says the platform was conceived to connect the best teachers to students across cities. “There is a general feeling that there is a dearth of good teachers in the smaller towns. Our model helps students in smaller towns connect with teachers, who probably are located elsewhere but are established themselves in their respective subjects.”

“And it is not restricted to subjects taught in schools and colleges. We have on-going sessions on the Bhagvad Gita, Carnatic music, yoga for Chinese students, CAD/CAM, and so on. One can enjoy the convenience of the digital world coupled with the comfort of traditional learning,” he said and clarified that Kaaryin goes beyond online learning.

“The sessions are live and interactive as in a traditional classroom. The user can attend the sessions from the comfort of his or her home or from any of our centres. Incidentally, we have many senior people who are passionate about teaching and are keen to groom and mentor young minds,” he said.

Expansion plans

The three-year-old start-up has established four centres (classroom set-ups) at Attingal near Thiruvananthapuram, in Coimbatore, Chennai and Salem. Anantha Krishnan plans to set up 200 centres in the next 12 months. “These centres are touch points. Our experience shows that after a while the students prefer to take lessons from their homes. We do not charge them for using the centre,” he added.

Over 2,000 students and 800 teachers are registered on the platform. “We have teachers who are 70+ and professionals with a passion to teach and help youngsters.”

Live Tutor Solutions is venturing into China. “South Africa is looking for English and Maths teachers from here and there is huge opportunity for such supplementary coaching in Latin America as well,” he said.

On investment, he said “we are a team of four promoters, who have invested about $1 million in this venture. A private equity firm has evinced interest in investing in our company. Talks are at an advanced stage.”
