Kerala Police will host a two-day International Cyber Security Conference, titled COCON XI, on October 5 and 6 in Kochi. COCON, an annual event, is conducted as part of the International Information Security Day, according to Manoj Abraham IPS, IG of Police, and nodal officer of Kerala Police CyberDome.

Trending topics

Kerala Police will partner with POLCYB (the Society for the Policing of Cyberspace) and ISRA (Information Security Research Association), a registered non-profit organisation. POLCYB, based in British Columbia, Canada, aims to enhance international partnerships among public and private professionals to prevent as well as combat crimes in cyberspace.

COCON is specially designed for the IT industry, Government departments, banking institutions and public sector undertakings with an IT Infrastructure.

The conference will debate on latest trending topics of data privacy, blockchain, cyber crimes, cyber warfare and Internet-of-Things (IoT), Abraham said. It will essentially have three different tracks this year. The first one is a general track, where all policy issues will be discussed.

The second is a technical track, and the third, a live track, that features live demonstrations including on various technology options, latest cyber crimes, hacking of aircraft and cars as well as threat from UAVs. A modern exhibition of cyber security, data privacy and digital threats is also being organised along with the conference, where representatives from major global IT companies will participate.

‘Crimes under-reported’

COCON will provide a platform to discuss, showcase, educate, understand and spread awareness on the latest trends in information, cyber and hi-tech crimes, Abraham said. It aims to provide a hand-shaking platform for various corporate, government organisations, including investigation agencies, academia, research organisations and industry leaders for better coordination.

Though cyber crime is on the rise and it is becoming a great matter of concern, there is still lack of awareness among the general public, Abraham said. Individuals are not coming forward to report such crimes either due to a lack of awareness or their perception that such crimes would not be given due importance.

The Kerala Police CyberDome, a Centre of Excellence for the Kerala Police, was the net result of deliberations in and inspiration drawn from previous COCON events, Abraham said. It is envisaged as a collaboration centre for volunteers from both the public and private to converge and share information as well as resources relating to security of the cyberspace.

The CyberDome has won many accolades, including a 'Showcased Honoree in the Managerial Professional for an InfoSec Project Category for #ISLA Asia-Pacific 2018;' the SKOCH Order of Merit; the FICCI Smart Policing Awards 2018 in the category of Cyber Security; and the K7 Medal of Honour.
