The newly-appointed Chairman of MindTree, Dr Albert Hieronimus, said that his aim was to improve margins and ensure that the company becomes the number one place to work in.

In a thinly-veiled reference to Mr Ashok Soota, one of the company's founders, who quit recently, Dr Hieronimus said that others could call their companies happiest minds, but the happiest minds should be in MindTree.

“Soota is a great leader. I have a lot in favour of him even if I don't support some of the things he is doing recently,” Dr Hieronimus told Business Line .

Discussing the impact Mr Soota's exit would have, he pointed out, “Soota was just one of 10,000 MindTree minds. The other 9,999 are still here.”

Criticising Mr Soota's new venture, Dr Hieronimus said, “I have my doubts if this idea of Ashok's will work.” Dubbing Mr Soota's new undertaking as a me-too venture, he said that MindTree did not have to fear what Mr Soota did.

“Whatever he wanted to do, he could have done it at MindTree,” he said.

Since there is currently no non-compete clause between MindTree and Mr Soota, did the company fear that key people could quit and join Mr Soota?

Dr Hieronimus was emphatic that there was no such danger. “I can promise you no one of the core founders will quit. Not one,” he stated.

Averring that he had no desire to copy Mr Soota, Dr Hieronimus said that he wanted to take a different approach.

Different view

“To bring things forward, you need a different view,” he pointed out and said that his experience in various non-IT fields would enable him to bring a fresh perspective to MindTree because he could question what people in the IT industry would not question.
