After Varanasi, it is the turn of other tourist and pilgrimage destinations in the country to have Wi-Fi. The Taj Mahal, Saranath and Hampi will soon have the Wi-Fi facility to access the Internet, according to Union Communications and Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad. All the major tourist destinations in the country will have Wi-Fi facilities soon.

Addressing a gathering in Hyderabad via video conference from Delhi on Thursday, he said Wi-Fi was an important tool in digital empowerment to people. He asked the States to actively participate in implementing digital initiatives in the country.

“Digital architecture is very important in delivering citizen services and for the digital empowerment of the people,” the Minister said.

Earlier, he formerly inaugurated a pilot project that seeks to provide Wi-Fi around the Necklace Road (around Husainsagar). BSNL in association with Quad Zen and Telangana Government is offering the service. People can use Internet (after providing email or phone number) for free for the first minutes with speeds range up to 100 mbps. After that, they can continue accessing the web by buying different packages that ranged from Rs 30 (for 30 minutes) to Rs 150 for a day.

The Telangana Government is planning to make the entire city a fully Wi-Fi enabled city by the end of December 2015. “BSNL will do this in phases. We hope to complete the process well before the year end,” Telangana IT Minister K Taraka Rama Rao said.

The State Government, which is working on a 80,000 km long pipelines for the Water Grid project, will use the trenches to lay fibre optic network. “We will provide faster Internet connectivity through fibre optic network along with water,” he said.
