Motorola Mobility is discussing internally a proposal to revive manufacturing at its facility in Chennai. The firm, which sold 30 lakh phones in 10 months ending December 2014, will take a call whether it is worth manufacturing phones in India or not.

“Ultimately, the customer should benefit. If it is cheaper, we will do that. Or, if it benefits customers if we manufacture phones in India, we’d go for local manufacturing. We are discussing it internally. It is a continuous evaluation,” Motorola Mobility General Manager Amit Boni said.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, he said the company was planning to bring in more phone models and variants of its smart watch this year. About 80 per cent of sales come through the E and G series phones.

He was here to promote the newly launched Moto E 4G and 3G phones priced at Rs 7,999 and Rs 6,999 respectively.

He said the distribution of phones through Flipkart is working well for the company. “It helps in offering phones at a lesser price. For one, we are able to price a phone model at Rs 13,000 as against Rs 16,000 had we sell it through the traditional distribution channels,” he said.

The firm is also in the process of starting the service-at-your-doorstep facility in 10 cities more. “We have launched it in Delhi and got a good feedback. We are planning to roll this out across the country in the next few months,” he said.
