Farmers in Telangana will soon get phablets (a smart device bigger than a phone but smaller than a tablet).

Developed by the global agricultural research institute Icrisat, the device would be made available to farmers in a few days during the Digital Telangana week.

“The International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (Icrisat) developed the robust device with the help of a device maker. A few scientists from the institute developed the content relevant for small and marginal farmers,” Telangana IT Minister K Taraka Rama Rao has said.

Addressing a press conference here today, he said farmers would get updates related to crops, weather and other relevant information through these phablets.

The Government might ask institutions like Primary Agriculture Cooperative Societies (PACS) to buy the phablets and make them available for their respective members.

Digital Telangana Week

Beginning tomorrow, the State Government has lined up a host of events as part of the Digital Telangana Week campaign.

The Government would sign some five agreements with corporates on July 6 at an event scheduled at Tech Mahindra’s campus here. These include a pact with indigenous handset maker Micromax for setting up a manufacturing facility near Hyderabad.

The Government would also sign an agreement with a technological university to set up Cyber Security Academy in Hyderabad. “There is a dearth for cyber security experts. While China has a base of 10 lakh cyber security experts, India has only one lakh experts. We need more. We will train the youth in various aspects of providing cyber security. It would create employment opportunities for them,” the Minister said.

“We are in discussion with various ‘line’ (different) departments to explore the avenues to launch online and mobile-based services. To start with, we are going to make three services of MeeSeva (e-governance) available over mobile. We will add more services in the next few weeks,” he said.
