Chinese technology leader Xiaomi today launched the slim-bezels smartphone, Mi MIX 2, successor to the concept phone, Mi MIX showcased a year ago, but not brought to India.

The original Mi MIX caught the world’s attention because of the almost bezel-less format of the display. Being a concept phone, the Mi MIX wasn’t sold in very many regions, but the Mi MIX 2 is soon to be available in the Indian market for Rs 35,999. Xiaomi believes that the phone series has been a trend setter for the smartphone industry. Recently several premium phones, including the Galaxy Note 8 and the iPhone X, have adopted the all-screen format.

The 5.99-inch screen of the Mi MIX 2 has a 17:9 aspect ratio seeming to more or less fill up the entire body of the phone on the front. Manu Jain, Vice President, Xiaomi and Managing Director, Xiaomi India said, “With Mi MIX, we gave everyone a glimpse of what the phone of the future would look like. Mi MIX 2 has evolved from a conceptual design into a user-friendly phone catered to a wider consumer audience while retaining the wow factor. We are so proud to have brought Mi MIX 2 for our fans in India within a month of our global launch, and I am sure everyone will love how immersive the experience is.”

Mi MIX 2 builds on the foundation of the original concept. It is now 11.9% smaller than Mi MIX. Instead of the piezoelectric speaker solution in Mi MIX, the second-generation uses a hidden speaker that takes up a sliver of space between the top edge of the phone and the screen. At the same time, the front camera remains at the chin and Mi MIX 2 continues using the ultrasonic proximity sensor. This allows the device itself with all the components to fade into the background, while the focus is entirely on the screen.

On the back, the Mi MIX 2 is in a beautiful ceramic finish and has been jointly designed with world-renowned designer Philippe Starck.

Jai Mani, Product Lead, Xiaomi India said, “Mi MIX 2 is truly an example of what we stand for. It brings together a gorgeous ceramic back, a full screen display with minimal bezels and a reduced chin size. After an enduring process of 7 days, ceramic is baked at 1400° C and is converted from a brittle material into a strong, premium glass-like finish. We are truly glad to have Mi MIX 2 in India for our Mi Fans and I cannot wait for them to experience this high level of innovation from the house of Xiaomi”

Other features on the Mi MIX 2 include 43 network bands making the phone reliable for those who travel globally. Other specs include the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and the most recent Sony IMX386 sensor for its 12-megapixel camera which also comes with 4-axis OIS that reduces the effect of handshake or motion.

Mi MIX 2 will be available in a 6GB + 128GB version in India, priced at INR 35,999. There will be a special preview sale for Mi Fans on 17th October, at 12 Noon on Mi.com and Flipkart.

Following this, Mi MIX 2 will go on sale across Mi.com, Flipkart, all Mi Home stores, Mi Preferred Partner stores, and Large Format Retail Partners during the first week of November.
