Netmagic, in which Japan’s NTT Communications Company (NTT Com) holds an 81 per cent stake, is looking to invest about ₹2,000 crore to set up three new data centres in India.

The new data centres would be set up in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Noida in the next three years.

“We will more than double our data centre capacity in the next three years, as we see a huge growth in this business. We continue to see a robust growth in the next five years, especially with global players entering India and on the back of the exponential growth in the e-commerce sector,” said Netmagic Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Sharad Sanghi.

“We also see rising demand from banks, pharmaceuticals and media firms, while the adoption of cloud is also helping this sector,” Sanghi, who holds the remaining 19 per cent stake in the company, said. Following these, Netmagic would have a total of 12 data centres in the country with a total floor space of 12-lakh sq ft. The new centres in Mumbai and Bengaluru would have a floor space capacity of between 2.5-3 lakh and that in Noida would be about 1.5-2 lakh.

Netmagic would raise the amount either through internal accruals, debt and equity infusion from NTT Com or a mix of these.

Meanwhile on Wednesday, Netmagic launched its ninth data centre in Mumbai, taking its total floor space capacity to 6 lakh sq ft. The company has invested about ₹700 crore in the new 3-lakh sq ft data centre, which is the company’s fifth in Mumbai. It has invested closed to ₹1,200 crore across all its data centres in the last three years.

NLD plans In January this year, NTT Com said it plans to acquire a unified licence to provide national long-distance services (NLD) services through a new group company NTT Communications India Network Services Private Ltd.

“We have filed an application this summer and we hope to get the licence before the end of the year. We need the licence for our data centres, to connect from one with another,” NTT Com President and Chief Executive Officer Tetsuya Shoji said.

Initially, it will offer NLD services to Japanese auto majors in India, from whom the company has got commitments. NTT Com would also look at applying for an International Long Distance (ILD) at later stage, Shoji said, but did not elaborate.
