An online platform, Medileaks.in, which aims to provide patients and others a mechanism to share their healthcare experiences has been launched in India.

“Patients, consumers and healthcare professionals can share their experiences, incidents and observations pertaining to specific malpractices, irrational and/or unethical practices in healthcare and its allied fields,” said a Medileaks.in statement.

“Medileaks’ goal is to identify trends and patterns in healthcare malpractices to benefit consumers and for informed policy making,” said Sunil Nandraj, who along with fellow healthcare professional Alam Singh, has conceptualised the site.

“Although we expect most visitors to submit individual anecdotes, we also provide a confidential & anonymous platform for industry insiders to inform about long-term and systematic abuses and practices,” Singh said in a statement.

The non-profit Web site was launched in Delhi on Wednesday, followed by a panel discussion on consumer health issues by Keshav Desiraju, Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs; Samiran Nundy, Chairman, Department of Surgical Gastroenterology & Organ Transplantation, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital; and Amit Sengupta, Associate Global Coordinator, People’s Health Movement, a statement by Medileaks said.

Medileaks said the Web site will run on the strength of volunteers who process submitted information and will periodically release selected content online with a vision to empower the nation at large and improve healthcare in India.

In particular, it seeks submissions that focus on institutional issues that are now systematic and ongoing in the healthcare industry, it added.
