The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) has extended the last date for public response on draft Personal Data Protection Bill to September 30.

The Ministry had earlier announced comments from general public will be accepted till September 10. In a release on Wednesday, it stated that the date for feedback submission has been extended.

Justice BN Srikrishna Committee submitted the draft of Personal Data Protection Bill on July 27 that makes explicit consent mandatory and ensures that the data is only used for purposes it was intended in the first place.

Failing to meet these provisions can cost companies dear, with the bill laying down penalties that can go up to ₹15 crore or 4 per cent of a company’s total worldwide turnover.

The report had come in the backdrop of Facebook data breach and provocative messages spread on WhatsApp resulting in violence and mob lynching.

The report and draft is available on the MeitY website.
