Users planning to exchange their old feature phone for a new JioPhone under Reliance Jio Infocomm's (RJio) Monsoon Hungama offer will have to shell out an additional Rs 594 to activate the handset. This effectively increases the price of the new handset to Rs 1,095.

On Friday, RJio, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Reliance Industries (RIL), had launched a special recharge plan priced at Rs 594 under its Monsoon Hungama offer. The new JioPhone, bought under the exchange offer, will function only on recharge with this coupon.

"Monsoon Hungama is a combined offering of a JioPhone at Rs 501 and a six-months unlimited voice and data recharge of Rs 594," RJio said in a statement.

It also said that the Rs 501 security deposit is refundable after three years. Under the new tariff, users will get unlimited voice and data for six months, it added.

Additionally, JioPhone users under the Monsoon Hungama exchange offer will also get a special exchange bonus of 6GB data voucher worth Rs 101. With the 6GB voucher, the total data a user can avail would rise to 90 GB over six months.

Making the Monsoon Hungama announcement on July 5, RIL Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani had said that under the scheme, existing feature phone users can exchange their handset for a new JioPhone for Rs 501. The announcement was made at RIL's 41st AGM.

The scheme was to start from July 21, but has been advanced by a day with its launch on July 20 (Friday). The Rs 501 can be availed at retail points on exchange of any old 2G, 3G or 4G (non-VOLTE) phone that is in working condition.
