NASDAQ-listed, Seagate Technology plc, on Friday, launched external storage devices to back-up content from social media sites including Facebook and Flickr.

Targeted at individual users, the products will also provide regular back-up services. Called as “Backup Plus” the hard drives are designed with an external storage that can work interchangeably on both Windows and Apple operating systems. Products also have hassle-free “Seagate Dashboard” software that enable one-click local backup.

According to a recent survey commissioned by Seagate and conducted online by Harris Interactive between May 22 and 24 this year, nearly 54 per cent of respondents have either lost files or know someone who has lost files. Nearly 27 per cent of the respondents have lost files.

Almost all 97 per cent of those surveyed were identified as computer owners; only 11 per cent have a continuous backup plan and only 10 percent have a daily backup plan. All respondents were from the USA.

A release issued by the company stated the external storage devices are available in four colours of red, blue, silver and black.

The portable 2.5 inch device is priced at Rs 5,600 with a capacity of 500GB and Rs. 7,700 with a capacity of 1 terabyte (1000 times of 1 GB).

The Backup Plus Desk (a 3.5-inch non-portable drive) with storage capacities of 2TB and 3TB are priced at around Rs. 8,500 and Rs. 12,000.
