SliQBits is offering its voice and video call service free and unlimited for smartphone users in India. SliQ users will have ₹10 credited to their mobile phone account after their first call. This will cover 42 voice calls of three minutes each, or 8 video calls of the same duration or a combination. After these calls are completed, the user’s account will be reloaded with another ₹10. Former Bharti Airtel CEO and Micromax Informatics Chairman Sanjay Kapoor is one of the investor and mentor to SliQBits, a venture started by a bunch of engineers from Bengaluru and Silicon Valley. Sliq offers voice chat even at 25 kbps and video call at 45 kbps. The app works even on 2G networks. The service is supported by revenues from advertisements from services such as AdMob (by Google) and InMobi. The ads are jingles at the start of each call (instead of rings), banner ads at the bottom of the screen, and interstitial ads at the end of each call. As call volumes increase, ad revenues are expected to be substantial.
