He may have retired a couple of decades ago, but cricket legend Kapil Dev is back in the game with a social media application that will compete with Facebook and reward certain users with cash prizes.

The application, SloPho, allows users to participate in games, contests, polls and quizzes daily and win cash prizes up to ₹25,000. The application is in direct competition to Facebook and other social media platforms as it also allows businesses to do targeted campaigns by region and language.

Kapil said though the concept came to his mind a year ago, he was inspired to act on it after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ campaign. And just as he did on the cricket field, the all-rounder is keen to back young talent. Kapil’s partners include Aman Sahani, who is currently pursuing his graduation in economics from the University of Delhi. Kapil has literally thrown the ball to Sahani by appointing him the CEO of the new company and has set stiff targets. “We expect five million users in the first six months and double that number every quarter,” the former India cricket captain said.

Kapil said he is also inspired by the likes of Sunil Bharti Mittal, Ratan Tata and Mukesh Ambani, who have successfully adapted with the changing times. “If you start something and if it doesn’t work then I am a failure and I don’t want to be a failure in life. We will give it our best and hope to grow,” Kapil said. He said that while business ventures are more difficult than playing cricket, both required hard work. “You just have to work hard to succeed,” he said.
