“India has won!”, a tweet by Narendra Modi on May 16, has emerged as the ‘golden tweet’ for 2014. A golden tweet is the most re-tweeted tweet, according to a blog post on Twitter’s web page. That particular tweet got 70,565 re-tweets.

ISRO’s Mars Orbiter’s tweet, “What is red, is a planet and focus of my orbit”, was in the 10th position with 12,489 re-tweets.

In fact, Mars Orbiter’s tweet, “Howdy @MarsCuriosity? Keep in touch. I'll be around”, was in ninth position with 12,494 re-tweets.

Of the 10 peaks in twitter conversations among Indians, two belonged to Narendra Modi, and three to cricket.

The blog post said that Rohit Sharma’s world record score of 264 runs against Sri Lanka on November 13 recorded the highest peak in Twitter conversations in India during 2014.

The Tamil superstar Rajinikanth’s arrival on Twitter in May recorded the second highest peak in conversations.

However, Modi could not hold the forte in the fastest-rising Twitter hashtag trends in India. It was Aam Admi Party’s campaign with hashtag #MufflerMan in support of its leader Aravind Kejriwal was in the third position in India. Conversations around football world cup with hashtag #WorldCup and the disappearance of the flight of Malaysian Airline with hashtag #MH370 were in the first two positions.

With 11.9 million followers, Amitabh Bachhan tops the list of most followed Indian Twitter accounts. He is followed by three Khans of Bollywood Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman with 10.3 million, 9.95 million and 9.5 million, respectively.  Narendra Modi was in fifth position with 8.53 million followers.

During 2014, Modi’s account saw an addition of 4.62 million followers till December 9, an increase of 54 per cent. The twitter handle of the Prime Minister’s office saw a growth of 60.83 per cent during the year.
