The Chief Executive Officer of Twitter Jack Dorsey is unlikely to appear before the Parliamentary panel of India and will send Colin Crowell, Head of Public Policy, Government, and Corporate Philanthropy at the company, instead.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology headed by Anurag Thakur, Member of Parliament, had on February 11 summoned Dorsey to appear before it on February 25, over measures taken to ensure the safety and security of the users and allegations that the social media site is discriminating against ‘nationalist’ posts.

Sources close to the development told BusinessLine that though the microblogging platform has not confirmed anything in writing, it has verbally said Crowell, along with some senior officials, would be coming for the meeting.

Thakur said he has called the CEO of Twitter and other senior officials, but does not have any update on who is going to represent the company.

“We have summoned the Twitter CEO and its senior officials, but have no update,” he said over the phone.

There have been concerns over data privacy on social media because such platforms could be used to interfere in the elections.

Political parties have also been complaining that their Twitter accounts have been disabled or blocked, an issue which is also expected to be addressed during the meeting.

Improving transparency

Meanwhile, earlier this week, Twitter had said it would now provide details, including ad spends and impressions data of tweets from political entities to users in India, in an attempt to bring in greater transparency.
