Tatanet Services Ltd (TNSL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nelco Ltd, has won a licence from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to provide In-Flight and Maritime Connectivity (IFMC) services. The company is also in talks with the Department of Space (DoS) and Ithe ndian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to improve its satellite infrastructure to offer high- quality IFMC services.

The licence (authorisation) was granted under the ‘Flight and Maritime Connectivity Rules-2018’, announced by the Central government, the company said in a statement.

“This licence will now make it possible for people to access high-quality broadband Internet services and make voice calls while flying in Indian airspace and sailing in Indian waters, in the same manner that they do while at home or office,” P J Nath, MD and CEO at Nelco, said.

Nelco has ground infrastructure and satellite coverage over India and currently serves the business-critical needs of various users such as ATMs, petrol pumps, bank branches, offshore rigs for oil and gas exploration.

Nelco, a Tata enterprise, was started in 1940 as an electronics company and now provides VSAT services through Tatanet Services.
