TechTop Centre, a place for innovation, fabrication and entrepreneurship at Chirayinkeezhu near here, has received accreditation from the US-based Fab Foundation as a Fab Lab.

This is the first Fab Lab (www.fablabs.io/TechTop) in South India, says Rajesh Nair, chairman of TechTop and a visiting scholar at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Innovation contest

TechTop is originally a national level innovation contest for engineering colleges to drive innovation.

Fab Lab is the educational outreach component of the MIT Centre for Bits and Atoms, an extension of its research into digital fabrication and computation.

It consists of off-the-shelf, industrial-grade fabrication and electronics tools, wrapped in open source software and programmes written by researchers at the MIT centre.

It is a technical prototyping platform for innovation and invention, providing stimulus for local entrepreneurship. A Fab Lab is also a place to play, to create, to learn, to mentor, and to invent.

It connects with a global community of learners, educators, technologists, researchers, makers and innovators - a knowledge sharing network that spans 30 countries and 24 time zones.

As a Fab Lab, the TechTop Centre has digital fabrication facilities for mechanical and electronic prototyping, such as 3D printers, PCB (printed circuit board) maker, micro-controller prototyping and senor development.

Live-in workshops

TechTop has already conducted three live-in workshops on innovation, fabrication and entrepreneurship at the TechTop Centre.

It proposes to conduct residential programmes to catalyse entrepreneurship amongst the student community.

The participants undergo an intense hands-on experience in opportunity identification and evaluation, product fabrication, and business plan development.

The curriculum is developed at MIT and offers an all-round exposure to innovation and entrepreneurship process that changes their attitude towards starting their own ventures.

Since 2013, Rajesh Nair he has initiated innovation workshops across various institutes in India with the pursuit to ignite young minds to the importance of constant ideation and innovation.
